OK, so even though I've been a part of the development, evolution and history of the web, I must confess that I was "Blogger-phobic" in that I didn't understand how people can be so interested in what each other has to say, but now I get it!
Pure and simple: the cream rise to the top! Just like in every other medium - TV, Radio and Print - quality is what is sought and Blogs are the most cost effective process and mass exposure opportunity that an individual should begin with to both gain experience as well as an audience.
Passion / expertise / both are the criteria that must be in your thought process when you begin a blog because if you are not either very passionate, very knowledgeable and hopefully you are both, you're not going to succeed. Why not? You need to put time and care into your blog and it may be months or even years before your topic becomes popular or sought so you have to maintain your zeal for the product long-before anyone else does.
The best strategy that I can recommend is to find both a topic, a domain name and content resources to support your effort that all reinforce a popular and sought-after item on the web. This doesn't have to be a long-term deal however in that if you can find the right junction between opportunity, a domain name and content resources you can generate revenue and interest quickly by leading the site visitors to resources, news and products that all generate revenue models. However, expect that these are anomalies and that the "slow and steady" bloggers still usually win the races.
